The Giulia Spider's twin-cam responds to regular, methodical servicing with clean fluids — and on an alloy engine, that discipline is preservation as much as maintenance. Here are the essentials, with the usual caveat to confirm figures for your own car.
Engine oil
The factory specified SAE 20W-40, with an oil change of around 6.2 litres (roughly 11 imperial pints) at intervals of about 3,700 miles (6,000 km). Many owners today run a good classic 20W-50 multigrade. Use fresh oil of the right grade and don't stretch the intervals — clean oil is what keeps the twin-cam, and its timing chain, healthy.
Coolant
The cooling system holds around 7.5 litres. As covered in the cooling article, use the correct mix with a proper corrosion inhibitor for an alloy engine, and renew it on schedule rather than endlessly topping up — neglected coolant is the twin-cam's great enemy.
Gearbox and axle
The five-speed gearbox takes roughly 1.5 litres of the specified oil, the differential its own. Keep both topped up to the correct levels with the right grades, and watch for the weeping seals that lower them.
Fuel and ignition
The engine is designed for around 92-octane petrol (modern super-unleadeds are fine). Keep on top of the ignition and carburation service items — points, plugs, filters, and carburettor balance — which do as much for how the car runs as any major work.
The principle
None of this is exotic; the point is regularity. A Giulia Spider serviced often, with clean fluids and correct grades, is reliable and rewarding.
